4 kms of trees removed for love.

A tour of the royal apartments brings you to the Empress’s chamber with its view along the Percée des Beaux-Monts – an avenue stretching into the forest, created by Napoleon to remind his wife of her beloved Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, requiring the removal of 4km of trees.

Compiègne is a delightful place for a couple's break, with cobbled streets lined with tea-rooms, including Chez Célestine. Make sure to pick up some picantins (grilled hazelnuts with nougat and chocolate) from one of the many chocolate shops. Then retreat to the heart of the forest, to Auberge à la Bonne Idée with its chic rooms and gourmet fireside dining. Don't miss the nearby Saint-Jean Oak, one of France's oldest trees, or a walk in the forest – at its most atmospheric in autumn.
