Near the A1 between Paris and Lille
By day, stretch your legs with a bike ride in the Forest of Compiègne, one of northern France’s largest, and discover the enchanting Château de Pierrefonds, which doubled for Camelot in the BBC’s Merlin. Compiègne itself has an 18th-century royal palace and cobbled streets lined by tea-rooms and chocolate shops.
Near the A16 Between Paris and Calais
Soak up the sea air and views of the Baie de Somme – one of the world’s most beautiful bays – over moules frites or a seafood platter. The same views will greet you when you wake in the boutique waterfront Hotel Les Pilotes in Saint-Valery-sur-Somme with its medieval ramparts and boardwalk.
