Coastal holiday cottage in Northern France for 2 with spa

Tell us (though we think we already know the answer), have you ever stayed in a holiday cottage with a name as evocative as ‘S’évader entre Terre et Mer’ – or ‘Escape between Earth and Sea’, in English? One thing’s for sure, when you arrive at this gorgeous pair of coastal holiday cottages in Northern France - each sleeping two and located in Gravelines (just 25 minutes from Calais), you discover just how apt that description actually is, because here you’re in pole position for the Opal Coast’s long and sandy beaches and dramatically ever-changing skies. Better still, breakfast’s included, better better still so is a complimentary bottle of champagne, and better better better still, each holiday cottage has its very in-cottage spa and sauna!

Choosing between the ‘Terre’ cottage, the ‘Mer’ cottage or the "Bateau" cottage is your only dilemma. In addition to the private spa facilities, each cottage is cosy yet spacious, with a fully equipped kitchen area, bathroom area, outdoor terrace, and romantic mezzanine bedroom with king size bed. The only major difference is in the décor: request the ‘Terre’ cottage for an urban industrial look or the ‘Mer’ and "Bateau" cottages for relaxing ocean vibes.

After breakfast - which owner Elisabeth will leave for you at your door - there’s much romance to capture in this heavenly yet sometimes overlooked part of France. The town of Gravelines itself - with its historic ramparts - is somewhere best explored by boat, since it’s the only town in the whole of France that you can sail around in its entirety, like a little island. You can also climb the lighthouse for incredible views, walk along the beach at Grand Fort Philippe and visit the Platier d’Oye nature reserve close by. Just a little further afield, there’s the famous town of Dunkirk where you should make a beeline for the seafront at Malo-les-Bains; it not only bursts with WW2 Operation Dynamo history but is also a buzzing beach-bar-beach-hut type of place, lined by the colourful villas you’ll recognise from Christopher Nolan’s film ‘Dunkirk’. There are also two off-the-beaten-track beach finds a little further up the coast that will each fill you with intrigue: the wreck of the Crested Eagle at Zuydcoote and the mirrored bunker on the beach at Leffrinckoucke: a work of art and completely unique photo opportunity.

There’s just one last thing at this coastal holiday cottage in Northern France. If you simply can’t be separated from your cottage and its private hot tub, consider eating in and taking advantage of the ‘traiteur’ option – a gastro-take-out service from a local restaurant. Including appetisers, a starter, main and dessert (and with Elisabeth organising it on your behalf), staying in is the new going out in Northern France!
