If you like horses, the added bonus of this gite in Calais in northern France is that Tour de Nielles is located at the heart of a stud farm, the building itself a former barn converted into a cosy gite. In fact, the kids won’t be able to contain their excitement as there are 2 children’s rooms (linked by a cute spiral staircase) plus a garden with balance bikes and scooters to play with. Parents’ wish lists are covered too: sunloungers, a truly well-equipped kitchen, a barbecue for crowdpleasing al-fresco meals and plenty of little touches to make sure that this is a smooth and stress-free break for everyone (beds already made up for your arrival, breakfast left for you in the fridge, and no end-of-stay cleaning frenzy!). And *get this*… if you book it up before you come you could even indulge in a massage while the kids are entertained by the gite owner Isabelle. She’ll be more than happy to take the children to see the horses and foals, and as a mum of three herself you can rest assured that she’s likely to have all the baby kit you might need so that you can travel light.

Within a 20-minute drive, you’ll find a whole host of things the kids (and you!) will love: Wissant beach (voted one of Vogue’s top 17 most beautiful beaches in France and somewhere to throw down your towel and indulge in some mindful sandcastle making!); the swanky new beachfront at Calais (as well as the town’s lighthouse that you can climb for awe-inspiring views, if you’re OK with 271 steps that is!); or for something très niche you and the kids can get hands on at Meccano Lab, an immense games room with thousands upon thousands of pieces to assemble! If the wonders of the oceans are more your thing Europe’s biggest aquarium Nausicaà is close by in Boulogne-sur-Mer where you can touch ray fish and even get up close and personal with sharks! Finally, safe clifftop walking around Cap Blanc Nez is the ultimately revitalising family activity and on a clear day you might even spy the coast of England, a reminder that you’re both close to home and a million miles away.

My favourite outings in Calais

When you come to Calais, there are places that are simply unmissable; unique and spectacular, they're just perfect for a romantic weekend getaway. I love the Grand Site of the 2 Capes, a classified Grand Site de France, is imposing, refreshing, and the view it offers of the sea and the White Cliffs of Dover is simply magnificent: perfect for an intimate stroll hand-in-hand along a scenic hiking trail. If you would like to meet some locals, there's nothing like a visit to the Channel, one of the city's cultural hubs, where you can enjoy a truly excellent glass of wine in the building of the former abattoirs located at the port. I also recommend seeing the view from the top of the magnificent belfry of Calais, with its bird's-eye view of the Bourgeois de Calais by the famous French sculptor, RODIN, and its panoramic view of the sea. You won't be sorry!
