High on the list of great places to visit in France, the dynamic city of Boulogne-sur-Mer is ideally placed for those looking for weekend break ideas within easy reach of Calais – the Channel ferry port lies just half-an-hour’s drive away.
Nausicaà
Boulogne’s best-known attraction is Nausicaa, the Centre National de la Mer. Not only one of Europe’s largest aquariums open to the public, this is also a leading marine research institute that has been recognised as a Centre of Excellence by UNESCO. Through its popular exhibits including a sea-lion reserve and Penguin Beach, Nausicaa aims to educate visitors of all ages and hence to further the conservation of our oceans.
And then of course there are the beaches. Right next to Nausicaa, the city’s main Plage de Boulogne-sur-Mer offers sand-yachting and kite-surfing for those who are feeling active, or alternatively deckchair hire for those who just want to take it easy.
Boulogne beyond the beach includes the 13th-century ramparts that surround the Haute Ville or upper town with its charming cobbled streets.
It’s here in the upper town, also known as the Ville Fortifiée, that you’ll find the Château-Musée de Boulogne, with its archaeology, local history and fine-art displays, and the city’s cathedral, the Basilica of Notre Dame. Completed in 1875 on the site of a medieval cathedral, Notre Dame boasts the longest crypt in the whole of France, stretching 100m in length and including Roman columns, fantastic frescoes and drawings by an unknown artist, and a fascinating collection of religious art.
The oldest monument in the walled city, however, is the UNESCO World Heritage listed belfry, connected to the town hall. This square Romanesque tower, built between the 12th and 18th centuries, was spared during the Revolution because it was the only place in Boulogne from which one could keep watch over enemy ships. On clear days, you can see the southern coast of Britain from the belfry.
The chance to enjoy authentic French food is another great reason to discover Boulogne…
And as well as enjoying regional specialities in restaurants both on the seafront and in the upper town, make sure to head to the Marché aux Poissons to browse its fantastic stalls laid out with gleaming local catch including herring, seabass and lots of shellfish. Boulogne is France’s largest fishing port, so the choice here truly is second to none.
