- Saint Valery Sur Somme
Just 1hr 15mins from Calais and near to the A16 motorway, Saint Valery sur Somme is a delightful seaside resort overlooking the Somme Bay. It has an exceptional view of the Somme Bay from its quayside alongside the Somme or even from the heights of the old town to the cobbled alleys.
Saint Valery sur Somme: stunning view of the Bay of Somme
A walk along the quayside of Saint-Valery-sur-Somme is one of the best ways of discovering the infinite colour palette of the Somme Bay that never ceases to change according to the tides and seasons.
For painters setting up their easels on the docks of Saint Valery, it's like having a ringside seat in front of a natural spectacle that is changing all the time. Bustling restaurants, art galleries, boats moored or setting sail for the open sea, the port of Saint Valery is full of life!
Take a quirky tour of the Somme Bay on board a real steam train! The little train of the Somme Bay "Le petit train de la Baie de Somme" stops at Saint Valery sur Somme, Le Crotoy, Noyelles sur Mer and Cayeux-sur-Mer.
Venture out into the old town: you're sure to have some romantic surprises!
Be inquisitive: the docks of Saint Valery already offer an exceptional sight of the bay, but imagine for a second the spectacular view from up above as you wander through the old town.
Not only are you guaranteed a sensational vista, but the atmosphere is also different: the fishing port gives way to enchanting cobbled alleys bedecked with hollyhocks.
As you follow the ramparts, taking a walk in the Herbarium, you are surrounded by tastefully preserved old stonework.
Discover the Bay of Somme on board a boat...
The Somme II, which has been listed by the Monument Historique register, is the most authentic of
the boats on the bay with its solid oak hull. Initially used as a working vessel for the marking out of the channel that leads to the ports of Saint-Valery and Le Crotoy, today it offers tours of the bay.
Want to catch a sight of the seals?
These inquisitive creatures stick their heads above the water to observe what's going on in the channel that leads to the open sea. Are there any other great "spots" for observing the seals? Go to the Pointe du Hourdel, by walking along the spit of pebbles. At low tide, they bask on the sand banks. Take your binoculars!
