- Compiègne Forest
France's third largest national forest is a mecca for all those who love the great outdoors.
Stroll along traffic-free waymarked routes that wind through the trees or hire bikes (standard or electric) to explore on two wheels.
Among several sites of particular interest are the Clairière de l’Armistice, the glade where the World War I peace treaty was signed. Or you might venture to Saint-Jean-aux-Bois with its ancient abbey and one of France's oldest trees (planted under Saint-Louis, 1226-1270) – a lovely spot for a picnic.
Further activities for the energetic include treetop adventure courses for different ages. Afterwards, use the barbecue equipment beside the tranquil Etang St Pierre fishing lake and the Pavillon Eugenie, from which Napoléon III’s wife used to watch the hunt. For the full-on forest experience, there are even treehouses in the area, for both couples and families.
