- The Fête de la Mer in the french village of Saint-Valery-sur-Somme - 3rd and 4th August 2024
In the popular seaside town of Saint-Valery-sur-Somme in Northern France, about 90 minutes’ drive from the Channel port of Calais for those who visit France by car.
The Festival of the Sea is entertaining, joyful and moving all at once, paying homage as it does to lost seafarers hailing from its fishermen’s district Le Courtgain (don’t miss the houses there all dressed up with nets and colourful flowers). There’s also a religious service and procession in their honour. So the event is ideal for those who want to educate kids in French history and culture during their family holidays in France.
Otherwise, expect two days of festivities on and off the water, including live music, exhibitions and food stalls. Take in the sea air, admire the boats in the marina and enjoy moules frites in one of the many excellent restaurants and bistros of this pretty French village.
Travelling to France by car means you can really make the most of this lovely coastline, taking in local highlights including the Parc du Marquenterre nature reserve with its seal colony, bird hides and edible plants to forage, the family-friendly resort of Le Crotoy with its wonderful beach, and even a 19th-century steam train that chugs its way through the scenic marshes.
