Replanted in a landscaped style by Napoléon I after the French Revolution, this listed ‘Jardin Remarquable’ is popular with walkers, plant lovers and art and history aficionados alike.
Linking with the former royal hunting ground of the Compiègne Forest, its highlights include its spring flower displays, the garden of ancient roses (Damask, Centifolia, Gallica and Iris) that was reconstructed two decades ago using a document of 1821, and the Empress’ Cradle, a shaded ‘tunnel’ of trees and shrubs leading into the forest. Don’t miss the atmospheric tea salon, occupying a former orangery within the rose garden
