Gerberoy, in the Oise department, just two hours from Calais and near to the A16 motorway, is a village that is listed among the most beautiful villages of France.
The ideal destination for couples… and lovers of flowers and roses. Cobblestoned streets, old houses built in the 17th and 18th centuries, climbing roses, wisteria, Italian-styled gardens: Gerberoy is a jewel set in beautifully elegant and peaceful surroundings!
Gerberoy, with its similarities to Giverny, was very dear to the painter, Henri Le Sidaner
In 1901, when the painter Henri Le Sidaner expressed his desire to move to the country, like Claude Monet at Giverny, the sculptor Rodin recommended an enchanting house in the village of Gerberoy. He was immediately taken by the beautiful property whose gardens and orchards covered the ruins of an ancient citadel. He then devoted his life to his gardens at Gerberoy and to painting, given how closely intertwined these aspects of his life were for him. He encouraged the villagers to plant rose bushes everywhere to embellish every detail, every house and every lane of the village. The result of this "village revolution" is now there for everyone to see: streets that look like rose gardens… In June sees an annual Rose Festival with special displays.
The painter's gardens are open to the public. The visit begins with a tour of the painter's workshop, when time stood still in 1939, at the time of this death. The site has been preserved exactly as it was at the time. The magic continues as you wander along the path that leads to the gardens followed by the corner of the blue house that the artist painted so often. Everything, including the houses, roofs and views, have been preserved as they were when Henri Le Sidaner painted it.
The gardens of the painter Henri Le Sidaner
Behind the collegiate church of Saint-Pierre, a small door opens out onto the gardens; as you walk through it you reach a patio that overlooks the village. The 4000 m² gardens are laid out on three levels that are staggered in terraces leading to the painter's house.
A final detour by the promontory that overhangs the property.
Gerberoy’s restaurants and tea rooms are a must-visit, with some even giving you the opportunity to try Northern France’s famous roses in gastronomic form – try Le P’tit Gerberoy, a dessert of fromage frais with candied roses, served in the Jardins du Vidamé bistro/tea-room. Or have a rest in the Jardin des Ifs, which offers cuisine based on the produce of its permaculture kitchen garden, with flowers to enhance flavour or as decoration. In the same place, Delphine offers a large selection of cakes and teas.
