- Topiary and local fare at the Jardin du Mont Recollets in Cassel
The Jardin du Mont Recollets in Northern France is a place of peace and harmony ideal for reconnecting with nature, with yourself and with your partner.
Just an hour from the Channel Tunnel and ferry port of Calais near the border with Belgium, the Jardin du Mont Recollets is an officially designated Jardin Remarquable perfect for spending time together as a couple while discovering French culture, learning something new and indulging in French art de vivre in the form of regional cuisine in traditional estaminets. Unpretentious little café-bar-bistros, the latter are places to feast on hearty local specialities such as carbonade flamande – a comforting, slow-cooked stew of beef, caramelised onions and ale.
The 1.5-hectare Jardin du Mont Recollets is best known for its yew and boxwood topiary and for its area inspired by Brueghel’s Hunters in the Snow. With its maze-like configuration of different ‘green rooms’, it has a unique, slightly whimsical Flanders character. When you’ve toured its delights, you can refuel in its very own Estaminet – visitors particularly love the local beers and lemonades in unusual flavours including lavender, accompanying simple lunches of regional specialities. The sweeping views over the surrounding countryside are unforgettable too.
Things to do in Cassel
Laying claim to being the most Flemish town in Northern France, romantic, charming Cassel is an ideal base for exploring historic Flanders while soaking up some French art de vivre. Highlights are its Grand’Place with its gabled houses with brightly painted wooden shutters, the Kasteel Meulen medieval windmill, and walking in the low mountains of the Monts de Flandres. In April every six years or so, the UNESCO-listed parade known as the Ronde Européenne de Géants Portés, featuring giant carnival figures from all over Europe, is worth the wait!
