In the Jardins de Valloires, the rose garden is joined by a garden of medicinal plants and spices, a vegetable garden, a sensory garden that’s very popular with children, and a garden of evolution, created in honour of eminent local scientist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck.
Despite their atmospheric setting within the grounds of a 12th-century abbey, the gardens themselves are surprisingly young – designed by Gilles Clément, whose work includes the Parc André Citroën in Paris, they were created in 1985 as a place for gardener Jean-Louis Cousin to site his 3,000-strong collection of plants from northern Asia and North America.
The Jardins de Valloires are open daily from mid March to mid November and include a restaurant/tea room with a lovely terrace, where you can sample inventive dishes inspired by the gardens’ own produce.
