- Montreuil-sur-Mer Flea Market with Kids - 14th July 2024
Less than an hour south of the ferry and Eurotunnel port of Calais, just off the A16 in the medieval town of Montreuil-sur-Mer.
The Montreuil-sur-Mer Flea Market
Why you will love it: The Montreuil-sur-Mer Flea Market is more than just an antiques fair – albeit one of Northern France’s biggest and most hotly anticipated. Taking place on Bastille Day (the French National Day), this is a fun day out for all the family, with the chance to meet – and haggle with! – locals as well as stall-holders from the Netherlands, Britain, Belgium and Germany.
There’s plenty for kids to browse, at 500-plus stalls heaving with quirky items including old toys and games, while a fireworks spectacular from the Citadel at around 10.30pm rounds things off in style. But make sure to arrive before the 14th so the kids can join in the lantern procession through town the preceding evening.
Montreuil-sur-Mer – which inspired part of Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables – is a charming spot for a family break. Kids love a jaunt around the ramparts of the well-maintained Citadel with its panoramic views over the surrounding countryside.
Meanwhile, characterful family-friendly hotels, B&Bs and other accommodation in and and Montreuil includes old inns and even a former tannery, and there are plenty of great places to eat with kids.
