Journees-de-la-Rose flower-show and rose-festival at Chaalis Abbey near Paris is a floral feast for the senses – with inspiration for your own garden too
Every second weekend in June, in a tranquil south-western corner of Northern France, something explosive happens at the heart of Ermenonville forest: the 12th century cistercian Abbaye-de-Chaalis bursts into bloom for the prestigious Journées-de-la-Rose 3-day flower show celebrating every conceivable aspect of the world’s most romantic flower. With a footfall of 100 exhibitors and 20,000 visitors crunching the gravel, it’s undisputedly one of summer’s best horticultural events in France.
Already well-known for its art collections inside, Abbaye-de-Chaalis’ mature and manicured rose garden is a reminder of what nature and humanity can achieve together (think topiary, statues, elegant wrought-iron pergolas and archways of flower and foliage) ─ and there are are over 100 different varieties of the fairytale flower here to inspire you.
Journees-de-la-Rose flower show brings you together with specialist nursery suppliers and gardening experts showcasing their collections and sharing their knowledge too. Plan to add character to your own garden choosing from seeds, bulbs and bushes, row upon row of other flower varieties and gift your garden with French-style ornamental pieces, tools or gardening accessories. Factor in some time to enjoy exhibitions, workshops and conferences, punctuating proceedings for tea and French pâtisserie at the elegant outdoor tearoom. Well, we did say it was a feast for all the senses…
