Among the most moving things to do in France, the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing commemorations, organised by The Royal British Legion and open to all, mark the beginning of the Battle of the Somme on 1 July 1916. One of deadliest battles of the First World War, it saw 19,000 British and Commonwealth losses and 57,000 casualties on the first day alone.
Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, who also created London's Cenotaph, and unveiled in 1932, Thiepval – the largest Commonwealth war memorial in the world – is engraved with the names of more than 72,000 men from the British and South African forces reported who were missing in the Somme before 20 March 1918 but never identified or recovered. The nearby Thiepval Museum and Visitor Centre explains the Somme battles and puts them in the context of the war as a whole through a mix of audio-visuals, photographs and other compelling displays.
