- The Fête du Flobart with your family in Wissant - 25th - 27th August 2023
Wissant in France on the Opal Coast – perfect for those travelling to France by car, just 22km from the Channel ferry port of Calais (much of it via the A16 motorway).
Flobarts are a traditional boat native to the Opal Coast in Northern France, able to float in less than 30cm of water. The seaside resort of Wissant is the last fishing village to use this wooden boat and the method of fishing associated with it – a fact celebrated in its annual Fête du Flobart, a great idea for those looking for things to do in France for kids.
This lively event is a wonderful addition to family holidays in France, giving you the chance to educate kids about French culture and heritage while spending time as a family. On the agenda are fishermens’ songs and other live music, demonstrations of maritime crafts, seafood tastings and exhibitions. The highlight is a procession of flobarts through this pretty French village to the sea, with the boats pulled by Boulonnais horses – a local draft breed.
Wissant in France is at the foot of the Cap Blanc-Nez, one of the two headlands of the Grand Site des Deux Caps nature reserve with its clifftop walks, outdoors activities and views of the English coast (and perhaps some grey seals) – a must-see if you visit France with kids.
