- The open-air son-et-lumière show "Les Misérables" in Montreuil-sur-Mer - 26th- 29 th July & 2nd - 5th August 2024
In the historic French town of Montreuil-sur-Mer in Northern France, just off the A16 motorway less than an hour south of the ferry and Eurotunnel port of Calais, and hence ideal for those travelling for France by car.
This stunning cultural event – an open-air son-et-lumière show depicting the world-famous novel by Victor Hugo – is one of the most memorable things to do in France, especially if you love French history and literature. Hugo visited this pretty French village in 1837 and found inspiration in its fortified citadel, which he went on to use as a location for the first part of Les Misérables.
The spectacle is performed inside the Citadel, by a vast cast of 500 volunteers in historic costume. In addition to the incredible sound-and-light effects, expect live horses, cannons, dance and even fireworks.
Starting at 10.30pm and lasting an hour and 40 minutes, Les Misérables à Montreuil-sur-Mer costs €19 per person for allocated bench seating.
Montreuil-sur-Mer has some charming places to stay for those who want to make a break of it, from châteaux to boutique hotels and B&Bs. There’s also a fantastic choice of restaurants – two of them, the Château de Montreuil and La Grenouillère, Michelin-starred.
