Where to stay on the drive south
The Western Route A16/A28 to Bordeaux and Northern Spain via Le Mans and Tours

If you are heading towards the south of France of Spain following the atlantic coast, you will pass through some of Northern France's most beautiful areas. First, you will discover the Opal Coast. If you have not visited the Somme bay, this is a good opportunity. Named as one of Frances 10 natural wonders, it is an ever changing landscape of colour with the changing tides not to mention home to diverse wildlife. The Parc du Marquenterre Bird Park in the Somme Bay is a natural haven for hundreds of species of bird as it sits on the migration path. The Central Routes A1/A20 to northern Spain, Perpignan, Orléans, Limoges and Toulouse

Heading through the centre of France, or back to Calais via the A1 will have you passing through Chantilly, Compiegne, close to Amiens, through the Somme battlefields and near Arras. Chantilly is famous for its cream, but it also have a beautiful chateau and domain to discover. The chateau is home to an incredible post-impressionist art collection to rival the Louvre.
Built for Louis XV, the royal Palais of Compiege sitting in the heart of the magnificent Compiegne forest, is worth visiting. Restored by Napoleon I post Revolution, it was the scene for extravagant week-long parties hosted by the Emperor for his guests.
Arras is well worth a visit for its famous squares, belfry and Wellington tunnels.
The Eastern Route A26 to Marseille, Dijon and Lyon

If you are heading to or back from the French Mediterranean coast, or even the Alps, using the A26 motorway, you will be passing through Saint Quentin in Northern France just near Reims. The small town of Saint Quentin has incredible Art Deco architecture, and a very pretty center square.
