Enjoy the Fêtes Guillaume in Saint-Valery-sur-Somme
This exuberant festival devoted to William the Conqueror is a brilliant event to incorporate into family holidays in France, featuring an encampment with historic reenactments, a medieval market, concerts, street entertainers including jugglers and fire-breathers, and artisan food stalls.
As well as a great day out for all who visit France, Les Fêtes Guillaume is a wonderful way to educate kids on French history – it was from this pretty French village that Guillaume le Conquérant set out to conquer England. Over two days, costumed actors re-create daily life in Norman times, carrying out trades and daily occupations ranging from leather-working to cooking.
The glorious Bay of Somme on which Saint-Valery-sur-Somme sits is wonderful for seal-spotting and other wildlife encounters. Don’t miss a 19th-century steam-train ride through its marshes to discover Saint-Valery’s charming neighbour Le Crotoy, with its long sandy beach popular for sand-yachting and horse-riding. Both Le Crotoy and Saint-Valery-sur-Somme have family-friendly places to stay, as well of plenty of restaurants where you can tuck into a bowl of moules frites while enjoying sea views.
